The optional subject decision gets more agonising advice than almost any other part of UPSC preparation. It's a decision you can make well with a clear framework.
1. Start with genuine interest, not just scoring trends
A subject you find genuinely interesting is one you'll actually revise, rather than avoid.
2. Check the overlap with General Studies
Subjects like Geography, Political Science and Sociology overlap meaningfully with GS, so every hour spent also strengthens your GS answers.
3. Be honest about resource availability
A subject with great scoring potential but no structured guidance available to you personally is a much harder path than the numbers suggest.
4. Talk to people who've actually taken it — recently
Trends shift. Seek out first-hand experience rather than relying on general reputation.
5. Make the decision once, and commit
Switching optionals mid-preparation is expensive. Give yourself a genuine, time-bound period to decide, then commit fully.
